  1. They were each clearly in love with Brecht the man for periods of time, and even when romantic passions cooled, they remained dedicated to assisting Brecht the artist. Professor of Germanic and Slavic literature at the University of Maryland and author of two previous studies on Brecht, Fuegi further argues that substantial unacknowledged contributions to other famous Brecht plays were made by two of his mistresses.

  2. Brecht allegedly mastered the art of manipulating and subjugating women, causing them to subordinate their self-interest to his own. Fuegi traces the evolution of Brecht's parasitic relationships and aggressive ambition through close analysis of diaries, letters, and drafts of the literary works, revealing a man who was personallydazzling, a genius at assembling and directing the plays created in his workshop, but ultimately lacking in literary stamina, for which he depended on his lovers. Why would so many talented people such as those who worked so closely with Brecht and gave him so much of their lives ever have done so if all there was to Brecht is the Brecht in this book?

  3. This book will be controversial and corrective, but it will also generate much new and important work in Brecht studies. For example, Fuegi toys with the not unreasonable possibility that Brecht might have dictated much of The Threepenny Opera with Hauptmann seated at the typewriter.

  4. The result is a detailed, thoroughly researched critical biography of an icon of modern drama. In each of the forty-seven chapters of the book we are reminded almost ad infinitum of Brecht's mendacious conduct in public and private matters. Vilifying Brecht as a plagiarist is by no means new.
